Meet an Accountant

What made you decide to join our team?

I heard about this position through an internal recruiter at SIG. I really liked the people that I met with during my interview, so after that I knew this was the right fit for me. Coming in every day doesn’t even seem like work because I’m working alongside so many great people that make me feel like I’m an important part of the team.

What do you like best about working here?

The work is very challenging but also extremely rewarding. I’m constantly learning new things and never leave the office feeling like I didn’t accomplish something that day. I love the openness of the atmosphere and the fact that I get to interact with different departments every day.

We talk a lot about teamwork and collaboration at SIG. Where do you see this demonstrated in your current role?

On a daily basis, we request information from individuals both within and outside the organization to complete our tasks. As a department, we work closely with one another when preparing returns, with each person working on different aspects that flow into the overall completed return.

If you were speaking with someone who was considering SIG, what would you say?

SIG would be great place to start your career. It’s a very collaborative environment which naturally enhances your product knowledge. When you’re doing good work, it’s noticed and opportunities are there to grow and take on more responsibility.

Walk us through a typical day in your life.

I don't think there is a typical day because each day is different depending on what you're working on, what time of year we're in and what types of projects you are supporting. There's always a schedule and you have work ahead of time, so you know what you should be working on. This could include preparing returns, preparing work papers to support others in their return prep, following-up on open items, or responding to notices received, etc.

Describe what the transition from public to corporate accounting was like.

In my prior role in public accounting, I was in one set group focused on partnership returns but here we get to see partnerships, individuals, estates, trusts, etc. so I’m able to see a broader set of returns/tax projects and can see how everything ultimately flows together to the end. I love that I still get the same complexity of work here that I saw in public accounting, but I also feel like my work/life balance is much more manageable now. My team works together to complete our returns and at the end of the day we get to go home, see our families and do whatever we’re interested in. Whether it’s a sport or a hobby, we have that time.
