As a member of the Tactical Development team, I am responsible for designing, building, and maintaining applications used by traders, compliance, and infrastructure. My first task of the day is to check to see if there are any issues with my existing applications. Once any issues are resolved, I head to the kitchen to grab some breakfast.
As the day continues, I spend time developing applications and discussing requirements. As mini tasks are completed or if I am getting stuck, I will head to the gym for a few minutes and think about the next steps needed to solve my problems while I do a brief workout.
Lunch is at 12:30 p.m., and depending on the amount of work I have, I will either go out for lunch or eat what is provided in the kitchen. If I go out, I am generally in the nearby botanical gardens practicing juggling or minor tumbling. If I stay in, I will grab lunch and get some work done at my computer.
The afternoon is similar to the morning with development and design. On most days, a bit after 5, several of us head to the poker room for a small stakes game. We play dealer's choice, which includes Hold'em, Omaha, and variants on the two. This can last 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the interest of the game. After poker, the day is over and it is time to head home.
Everyone is super friendly. Other developers are eager to help me improve my skills by providing code reviews and helping me solve difficult problems. The office provides conversation on many topics, expanding beyond the regular office banter.
I get involved in a wide variety of projects that include websites, databases, and applications across many functions. I interact with colleagues from a variety of teams (trading, technology, and operations) and utilise the wide variety of software development skills I’ve learned in my time with SIG.
The company's general interest in our happiness. SIG provides lunches, on floor gym and showers, and lots of social events. There is also the incredible office view that will cause you to spend hours looking out the windows.
If you are prepared to work hard and think about how to gain a competitive edge, SIG is the place to be. You will be given lots of responsibilities, but also the rewards to match in an environment where everyone around you is vested in your success.
